West Mendip Way
The Mendips is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Somerset which stretches from the market town of Frome in the East to the Bristol Channel in the West. This area encompasses some of Somerset’s most attractive and varied landscape, from the limestone summits of the Mendip Hills to the pastureland of the Somerset Levels. This area offers the walker a variety of walking country, which still remains to be discovered by many people. The walking holidays in the Mendips give you the opportunity to explore this interesting area visiting such places as Wells, the smallest city in England.
This guided walking holidays takes you through the undulating Mendip escarpment from the city of Wells onto Cheddar famous for the Gorge, Cheddar Cheese and strawberries. It continues to Shipham before climbing to the summit of Wavering Down with its exhilarating views of the Bristol Channel and the Welsh Hills. The path then winds its self down and through the villages of Loxton, Bleadon and onto the coastal resort of Weston-super-Mare.
Your accommodation will be at the Webbington Hotel, Loxton, a three star hotel with leisure facilities, swimming pool and is situated on the southern slopes of the Mendips.
Day 1: Arrive
Day 2: Wells - Cheddar (M:11mls/17kms)
Leave Wells and head towards the village of Wookey Hole and continue on into the beautiful Ebbor Gorge Nature Reserve and at the top of the gorge you experience panoramic views of Wells and beyond. You arrive at the highest Mendip village of Priddy and then follow the path across a high open plateau into the Draycott Sleights Nature Reserve before descending down to the village of Cheddar.
Day 3: Cheddar—Shipham (M:8mls/13kms)
A shorter walk to enable us to explore Cheddar Gorge and the caves. This walk takes you through the Black Rock Nature Reserve towards Beacon Batch (325m) the highest point on the Mendips. You continue to Rowberrow Warren and then onto Shipham, where many years ago calamine was extracted and mixed with copper to make brass.
Day 4: Shipham— Weston Super Mare (M:12mls/19kms)
From Shipham you climb up to Winterhead Hill and on through woodland following Winscombe Drove.The route then takes you through Kings Wood to the summit of Wavering Down where the views are breathtaking. You then wind our way down to the village of Loxton and onward to Bleadon. The walk then continues along well defined tracks to Uphill on the coast.
