We start at Amsterdam and go first to Hoorn. Monumental facades tell of the history of this former Dutch East India Company (VOC) town. The town has at least 300 monuments. Around the harbour we'll find an old lock, cheese warehouses and fully-equipped modern marinas. The 'Wooden Head' landing stage, now frequently used by the historic 'brown fleet' of wooden boats, and the Hoofdtoren tower date from the 17th century. Hoorn is also a museum town. The Westfries Museum provides a picture of the history of the town and the region. Then we’ll drive over the Afsluitdijk (Enclosing Dike), where we’ll stop at the monument and have a look at the seaside and the Monument which carries the text: A people that live, build for their future. Our first stop in Friesland is Makkum, where we can visit the Pottery factory, which from 1640 has continuously been run by the Tichelaar family and visit the lovely small town, then on to Hindeloopen, where In the old center you’ll get a feel for Hindeloopen's unique character by wandering through the narrow streets and looking for the lovely views, the typical wooden bridges and characteristic facades. In the Museum Hindeloopen you’ll become acqainted with the rich maritime history and living culture of Hindeloopen, which manifests itself in the rich Hindeloopen art and in the fine old costumes. The drive back will go through the new Noordoostpolder (1942) and the Flevopolder (1968), polders that have been built after closing off the Sea by the Enclosing Dike.
