First we visit the ancient Church of San Clemente, mentioned in Christian sources as early as the 4th century. Rebuilt in the 12th century after the invasion of the Normans, it now consists of 3 different levels, the oldest of which takes us back to some private dwellings of Imperial Rome.
We then take a leisurely walk to the Colosseum, passing by and overlooking the Ludus Magnus, or gladiatorial school, at the foot of the hill once occupied by Nero’s lavish Golden House. We end with a visit to the interior of the Colosseum where in the arena, pagans and Christians came face to face.
Meet 9:30 am. at the side entrance of the Church of San Clemente, on Via San Giovanni in Laterano.
The tour does NOT include entrance fees (€ 5.00 at the Basilica and € 12.50 for the Colosseum); N.B. Please notice that Colosseum tickets give you access to the Roman Forum too, should you wish to continue and visit it on your own.
