that the label 'xueta' was truly earned and the whole community was properly Catholic.
The Xuetes have historically been stigmatized and until the first half of the
20th century practiced, and were seen obligated to practice, strict endogamy.
Today, an estimated 18,000 people in the island carry Xueta surnames
