A fascinating walk through the narrow streets of Volterra,a real Etruscan Jem and one of the finest and lesser known hilltop towns tucked away in the heart of Tuscany.
The ''magic and mysterious'' Volterra has its roots in three thousand years of history and the fact it is possible to find evidence and traces from every historical period gives the city a unique aspect.
Starting from Piazza Martiri della Liberta, we walk down to ‘Porta all’Arco’, rare example of Etruscan military architecture, gateway belonging to the 4th century BC city walls, then up to Piazza San Giovanni with the antique Cathedral and Baptistery; a few steps away: Piazza dei Priori, symbol of the civic and political power, and two of the most interesting examples of Medieval buildings: the Buomparenti tower-houses.
Proceeding along Via dei Sarti, the Reinassance Palazzo Minucci-Solaini, housing the city picture gallery, stands out. Withing the end of the tour, the astonishing view over the remains of a Roman theatre and Roman baths.
Not to mention the exclusive alabaster workshops (we will visit one of the most famous in town)
Meeting Point: Volterra, P.zza Martiri della Libertà
