Located approximately forty – five minutes or 31 miles west of Belize City, The Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center is unlike any zoo you may have seen. Set in the natural environment, visitors are given the opportunity to view over 125 animals-all native to Belize; many of them are endangered. Founded in 1983, by Sharon Matola, the zoo has developed a captive breeding program aimed at ensuring the continuation of its healthy animal population. Among the residents of the Belize Zoo, is April, the tapir, Belize’s national animal.
You get to see Belize’s wild cats including jaguars,puma, black howler monkeys, the harpy eagle, colorful parrots, and a few crocodiles as well.
