Arriving in Venice on a cruise ship, or simply coming by vaporetto from the Lido, the passenger is greeted by a number of impressive pieces of architecture, standing as massive sentinels between water and sky.
We shall survey the works of three major Venetian masters, whose creations characterize the Venetian skyline: the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore - on the island of the same name - designed by Palladio - with the harmonic proportions of the Renaissance; the huge Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute, the most ambitious and innovative jewel of the Venetian Baroque, and, along the Zattere, the 18th century Santa Maria dei Gesuati, by Giorgio Massari, whose elegance and equilibrium betray an unmistakable 'nostalgia' for Palladio and his famous and elegant 'Golden Time'.
