The Basilica, the Doge's Palace, the Bridge of Sighs, the Prisons - A must for any visitor to Venice. St-Mark's Basilica with the spiritual, all-pervading light of its golden mosaics, with its sumptuously colored marble floor, will introduce the theme of Venice's intense relations with Constantinople and the Eastern world. We shall then enter the Doge's Palace, seat of the Venetian power for over nine centuries. Today's visitors, like past ones, will be overwhelmed by the wealth of its decoration, and will learn about the rise and fall of 'La Serenissima', the 'most Serene' Venetian Republic. Cross the Bridge of Sighs and into the Prisons, still in use until 1922, and then back to the Palace for a last view of the majestic Giants` Staircase.
